YouTube launches dedicated Swiss site
YouTube has launched a Swiss version of its video site on the internet, promising to promote content from Switzerland with financing from online advertising.
Google, the parent company of YouTube, launched the new site on Tuesday in Zurich.
The default language of the YouTube.ch website will appear in one of Switzerland's official languages — German, French or Italian, Switzerland's — depending on the geographic location of users.
Patrick Warnking, head of Google Switzerland, told a press launch that the new site will make it easier to find Swiss content.
And Swiss providers of content will be able to gain revenue, Warnking said, according to a report from the ATS news agency.
He did not detail the share of revenue YouTube.ch would receive other than to say it would be “very fair”.
Google is negotiating with Swiss performance rights representatives over performers’ revenues from the video platform.
The Swiss YouTube site is the 54th one linked to a specific country.
With more than one billion registered users, YouTube is the most widely used video service on the internet.
