Spring is officially around the corner in Sweden

Believe it or not, spring is on the way to Sweden according to meteorologists, who have pointed to sunny skies and temperatures up towards 15C this week.

"It's looking hopeful," Marcus Sjöstedt, meteorologist at Swedish weather agency SMHI, told the TT news agency.

But don't hang up the winter jacket just yet.

The chill that's had Sweden in a stranglehold since late last year won't loosen its grip until the end of the week. The long-running high-pressure system that has been responsible for snow in April and ice-cold nights nationwide is finally about to head off.

SMHI predicted a few more cold days, but Thursday night should bring a low pressure system in from the south, likely to bring buckets of rain to central and southern Sweden.

And as the clouds break up and the sun pops out after the weekend, meteorologists have confirmed that Swedes can finally put away their winter clothes.

"We're seeing signs of really good temperatures, maybe up towards 15 degrees in the south if the sun properly helps out," Sjöstedt said.

Residents in northern Sweden, however, will have to wait a little longer for the warmth, despite clear skies and sunny days in the foreseeable future.
