Swedish store slammed for Facebook 'thief' pic

An Ica grocery store in Västra Götaland in western Sweden has been criticised after publishing a surveillance camera photo of a suspected thief on its Facebook page with the comment 'nice that you like our lamb and beef'.

The Facebook post on Thursday immediately began attracting comments, including several of a racist nature, according to a report in the Aftonbladet daily.

Several others pointed out the dubious legality of publishing the surveillance camera material and The Association of ICA-retailers (Ica-handlarnas Förbund) condemned the move.

"It is highly inappropriate and nothing that we would support. Regardless of whether it is illegal or not it is not appropriate to do so under the Ica brand," said Staffan Ekengren at the association to the newspaper.

"This is definitely something we will look into," he added.

But not all of the reactions to the Facebook post have been negative however with several supporting the unorthodox move to shame the suspected thief.

A police report was however filed against the store owner on Thursday night and The Association of ICA-retailers has instructed them to remove the photo from their Facebook page.

The offending photo was duly removed later on Thursday evening.
