A major cat-hunt is underway on the French Riviera to try and track down Brigitte Bardot's favourite moggy. The French icon has reportedly put up a reward of €600 for anyone who succeeds in finding her favourite cat Rontonton.

The one-time sex symbol has been worried sick ever since her cat Rontonton disappeared earlier this week in the exclusive Riviera resort of St Tropez.

“My pain is terrible. I cannot sleep,” the famous animal lover told the local newspaper Var Matin over the phone.

The two-year-old cat disappeared apparently after becoming frightened when gardeners were trimming bushes at the property on March 26th.

Rontonton is “small and round but does not have a necklace or a tattoo”, Bardot told Var Matin.

An advert in the newspaper carries two phone numbers as well as a notice that a €600 reward will be paid upon the safe return of the cat.

Since Var Matin launched an appeal to find the cat the number has been called around 200 times with numerous people reporting positive sightings of Rontonton.

The quest to find the cat was turned into a national cause on Wednesday when Canal Plus TV Show Le Petit Journal sent a team to St Tropez to help raise awareness of the lost moggy.
