Taking a call while answering the call of nature is no problem for 17.5 percent of all Germans, who said they would answer while on the throne. Among those aged between 18 and 29, the answer rate went up to 26.6 percent.

The study, conducted by the Stiftung Internetforschung for Ergo insurance group, also showed that 5.2 percent of all Germans would pick up while in the shower and that 12.6 percent of those between 18 and 29 would answer. The results were published in Wednesday's Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Even being in the cinema is no barrier for the younger generation to keep in touch with callers, with 7.4 percent of those between 18 and 29 saying they would answer their phones while watching a film. This sank to 2.8 percent overall.

More than a third (37 percent) of younger Germans would answer if their phone rang while they were eating in a restaurant, while 28.6 percent of people overall would do so.

Most people answer if their phone rings while they are on the bus or train - 59.1 percent of the general population and 72.8 percent of those under 29.

Whether a person picks up or not depends to a large degree on who is calling, with family members the most likely to be answered (87 percent) followed by friends (48.4 percent). Workmates and bosses are more often ignored, with only 11.1 percent saying they would always be available for work calls.
