The Easter Bunny has taken on Father Christmas and won, at least in chocolate form. Record numbers of German-made chocolate bunnies will hop their way into shops this year, millions more than the number of Santas made at Christmas.

A record-breaking 190 million chocolate Easter Bunnies have been produced in Germany in the run-up to Easter, said the German confectionery association (BDSI) on Friday.

That's around 50 million more edible bunnies than chocolate Santas made last Christmas and three million more bunnies than last year.

“The production of chocolate Easter Bunnies has hit a new record,” said Torben Erbrath, head of the association's chocolate products department.

Many of the chocolate Easter rabbits, linked in pagan and Christian traditions with the coming of spring, will not stay in Germany, but will be sold elsewhere.

44 percent will be sent abroad, mainly to other EU countries, but also to shops in the US and Australia.
