An intoxicated man has escaped relatively unscathed after tumbling onto the tracks at the Leuchtenbergring S-Bahn train station in Munich, police said on Sunday.

The 51-year-old fell between two carriages of a commuter train that was pulling into the station. He was dragged along for several metres before finally slipping beneath the train.

When the train stopped, he managed to clamber back onto the platform. He escaped with a few cuts and bruises but was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. The driver was unaware the accident had taken place.

The Munich S-Bahn commuter rail system carries some 800,000 people each day. In 2011, the Bavarian capital introduced a ban on drinking on board S-Bahn trains.
