"It's ultimately the king who decides the proceedings for the funeral," Bertil Ternert, the Royal Court spokesman, said in a statement.

"But Princess Lilian was a member of the royal court, so the funeral will obviously be carried out along those lines."

The princess will lie in state for the public from 1pm to 3pm on Friday at the palace church (Slottskyrkan) in Stockholm. She will be buried on Saturday.

Flags were flown at half-mast on Monday and church bells tolled in mourning for the 97-year-old princess.

In addition, Crown Princess Victoria has cancelled her name day celebrations for Tuesday in honour of Princess Lilian's passing.

A former beauty model, Princess Lilian died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Djurgården on Sunday afternoon, the Royal Court announced.

She had been a widow since the death of her husband Prince Bertil in January 1997.

In 2010, the Royal Court announced she was suffering from Alzheimer's and that she would not be participating in Crown Princess Victoria's wedding in June that year.

"It's incredibly sad. She was the last of her generation. Now we're starting a new phase for the royal family in which the king and his siblings are the oldest," Elisabeth Tarras-Wahlberg, a former Marshall of the Realm and long-time aid to the royal family, told the TT news agency.
