As people fight to keep the longest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall intact, we look back at the key events surrounding the once-hated Cold War barrier in this week's Local List.

Plans to build a block of luxury flats near the East Side Gallery raised the hackles of Berliners last weekend, with as many as 6,000 people protesting to stop another hole being knocked in the 1,316-metre-long stretch of wall.

A 40-metre section was moved in 2006, to make way for the O2-World sports and concert venue, part of a long-term redevelopment project along the River Spree.

The new dispute is just the latest chapter in a long history of events involving the concrete barrier. It was the site of brutal murders, monumental political speeches, courageous escapes, and spectacular rock concerts, like this:
