Helen Hunt propels H&M into Oscars limelight

Swedish apparel juggernaut H&M made its Academy Awards debut on Sunday night, in the shape of American actress Helen Hunt's midnight blue gown on the red carpet.

It is, however, not the first top-notch red carpet appearance for an H&M outfit.

Michelle Williams wore a strapless dress with a black skirt and a light gold bodice to the BAFTAs last February, H&M spokeswoman Camilla Emilsson Falk told The Local.

She said Hunt's inky strapless gown with a fishtail train was designed in collaboration with Hunt and the stylist of the A-list actress.

The silk satin design is not available in stores.

Some initial press reports that the minimalist dress had gem stones stitched into the lining were erroneous, Emilsson Falk said.

Hunt chose to accessorize the simple gown with jewellery reportedly worth more than $700,000.

The Oscars is a great fashion scene for us to show our design," H&M said in a statement to The Local.

"We think that Helen Hunt is a fantastic actress who with her 2013 Oscars nomination continues to prove why she has remained such a prominent presence in Hollywood."
