The lucky winner picked the right numbers: 12, 15, 28, 30 and 44, as well as the "lucky stars" 8 and 9 to hit the jackpot.

The sum is the third largest ever collected in Switzerland.

The biggest lottery win in the country was recorded in April 25 when a Portuguese man in French-speaking Switzerland collected more than 99 million francs.

A resident in the canton of Zurich won 83.9 million francs in November 2011.

Tuesday night’s win marked the 11th time a Swiss resident has hit the jackpot in the Euro Millions Lottery.

Begun in 1994, Euro Millions is a European lottery that takes place twice a week on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

The lottery pools the the stakes of punters in nine participating countries, making the prizes bigger than most national lotteries.

The main prize is “rolled over” to the next draw if there is no jackpot winner, meaning prizes can rise to as high as 190 million euros, organizers say.

In addition to Switzerland, the other countries involved include Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom.
