Second avalanche victim dies from injuries
A second man seriously injured in an avalanche at the Nendaz-Verbier ski area last week died in a Sion a hospital on Monday, Valais cantonal police said.
He was one of a group of six Swiss skiers, aged 15 to 55, who triggered a snow slide while hiking up an area known as Bec des Etagnes with skis over their shoulders last Thursday.
Four of the group were swept down the slope, including two who were seriously injured after being buried.
One of them, a 48-year-old Geneva man, died in the Sion hospital last Thursday.
Details about the latest victim were not immediately available.
Over the weekend, a 38-year-old Vaud man was found dead after ski touring in the mountains above Champex.
Avalanches in the Swiss Alps have claimed the lives of at least a dozen people so far this winter, according to ATS, the Swiss news agency.
Last Wednesday, a 20-year-old Swedish skier died on another off-piste slope near Nendaz, a day after a 52-year-old Valais woman died while skiing in the Val d’Anniviers region.
A total of 19 people died in avalanches in the 2011-12 season, while the average death toll over the past few years is around 25, ATS reported.
