It might seem as if Germany has been stuck under a cold, dark, damp blanket for the last few months and now weathermen are confirming this, as the winter is set to be the darkest since records of sunshine hours began.

"Germany has, until now, had the darkest winter since the start of regular sunshine records more than 60 years ago," said Dominik Jung from weather portal wetter.net.

The sun was such a stranger in Germany in January that it was the darkest ever since records began, with just 55 percent of the usual amount of sunshine for the month, the portal said.

And there is slim chance of relief, with little sunshine expected before the end of the month, when the meteorological winter finishes. "If the winter continues to be so dark until the end of the month - and it looks like it will - then it will have been the darkest winter of all time," said Jung.

It is going to get colder again too, the German Weather Service, DWD, said, with Monday night seeing air temperatures of down to -10C in some southern areas.

Tuesday will be snowy in southern and central areas, with rain and sleet in the west and a few snow showers in the north.

Daytime temperatures will be between 0C and 5C in many areas but higher regions will remain frosty. Winds will pick up in the north and north-east, while light snow will return to many areas, particularly in the south and east.

Wednesday will be even more snowy in the north-east, east and south approaching the Alps, with the north-east snowfall continuing through the night. Temperatures will drop to -10C in some areas where the snow clouds clear.

Thursday will be cloudy and at times snowy in northern and central regions but in many other areas the cloud cover will break up, leaving only a little snow. Top temperatures will be between -3C and 2C, with the Rhine region likely to be warmer.
