Sweden's Hansdotter claims slalom bronze
Swedish skier Frida Hansdotter came third in the World Ski Championships in Schladming in Austria on Saturday.
"I am super happy," she said.
The 27-year-old was leading the event after an opening run of 50.41 seconds but ultimately succumbed to the pace of US teen sensation Mikaela Shiffrin in the final.
Hansdotter, who has come second in four races this season, expressed satisfaction at getting on the podium in the final women's event of the World Ski Championships.
"I did two good runs and I have a medal so I'm satisfied," she said.
Mikaela Shiffrin meanwhile confirmed her status as the most promising prodigy in women's alpine skiing when she shelved her school homework for long enough to win the world slalom crown.
The sporting precocity of the 17-year-old, however, is not something she says has been born from merely landing at the right place at the right time.
"It's been 17 years in the making," Colorado-born Shiffrin admitted after her win.
Shiffrin's win consolidated the US team's dominant run at these championships, after Ted Ligety's three gold medals and Julia Mancuso's super-G bronze.
The medals podium was completed by Austrian Michaela Kirchgasser who delighted the home crowd by overtaking her highly fancied compatriots on the final run.
The performance resulted in Kirchgasser's first medal in a major event.
"I'm so happy. It's so great. I was standing there thinking I'd be fourth. I didn't even realise I was second," she said.
