Five students at a prestigious French school have been excluded after creating fake and insulting Facebook accounts for some of their teachers.

The pupils, aged 15 and 16, allegedly posted insulting content and comments on fake profiles bearing the real names of their teachers, and in some cases created “obscene photo-montages”, according to French media reports.

Two of the teenagers have been permanently expelled from the reputable Lycée Lakanal de Sceaux in the wealthy western suburbs of Paris.

Police have opened an inquiry into a complaint of "breach of dignity" and "public injury."

The school scandal comes just as authorities in Paris have set up a program to teach youngsters about the dangers of putting inappropriate material on their Facebook pages.

'Soyez net sur le net' ('Keep it clean online') is aimed at helping teenagers protect their online reputations so future employers are not turned off.
