The troubling findings were made after a survey of 3,077 boys and girls from 35 schools in the canton about their use of the web.

The survey showed that one in seven confessed to looking at porn sites “often or very often”, while the majority of those surveyed said their computers were not subject to a “parental filter”.

The survey was conducted by the University of Lausanne and the university institute for social and preventive medicine (IUMSP).

The results, reported online by 20 Minutes, showed that at least 99 percent of the kids had at least one computer at home, while 74 percent said they connected with the Internet every day.

The survey found that two-thirds of the young people spend less than two hours in front of computer screens during the week, mostly for pleasure, looking at movies, music or social media sites as well as games and sports news.

But they spend more time hooked to the Internet on weekends and during holidays.

The survey showed that computer use was problematic for 12 percent of respondents, tending toward addiction, 20 Minutes reported.

Organizers of the study said it was too early to link problems such as obesity and insomnia with internet use.

Respondents of the survey will be followed for the next two years in a bid to evaluate the effects of long-term internet use, Joan-Carles Suris, a researcher from IUMPS, is quoted as saying by 20 Minutes.
