Man suspected of killing his mum

A 27-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of killing his mother her home in Uppsala in eastern Sweden.

The man called police himself at lunchtime on Saturday, telling them that he had killed his mother.

When police arrived at the address in the Rickomberga district of the university city located 70 kilometres north of Stockholm.

"She was found in the home," said Uppsala police spokesman Christer Nordström.

The 27-year-old man was in the stairwell when the police arrived and he was duly detained for questioning. Following police interviews he was formerly arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police report that the man has no previous criminal convictions and is not previously known to the police.

According to Christer Nordström there were no other people found in the apartment.

"No other person is suspected of involvement."

The property and the immediate vicinity were cordoned off on Saturday in order for the police technicians to conduct a forensic examination.

Few details of the circumstances surrounding the suspected murder were divulged by the police over the weekend as the investigation continued.

"I can not go into any detail now," Nordström said.

Nordström added that efforts to notify relatives had been undertaken.
