A deep freeze is expected to hit much of Germany this weekend, with temperatures dipping to below minus 15 degrees Celsius accompanied by “extremely slick” road conditions, according to the DWD national weather service.

The worst driving conditions will be in the southwestern part of the country, where up to four centimetres of new snow is expected on Saturday, turning over to freezing rain by Sunday. The weather service warned of very slippery roads and told drivers to exert extreme caution in the region.

Some new snow and dangerous driving conditions are forecast for the beginning part of the coming week “in most parts of Germany.”

The combination of snow, then some warmer temperatures changing that into freezing rain, then a drop in temperature overnight which is expected to freeze the precipitation should make for very tricky conditions.

Morning temperatures are likely to be around minus 10 degrees, with dips as low as minus 15 in the Alps.
