As they see their energy bills rising, nearly half of Germans greet colder weather with an extra jumper rather than turning up the heating, a survey suggested on Wednesday.

Nearly 90 percent of people asked by standards watchdog Dekra said that they were actively careful about how much electricity they used during cooking, and were mindful to turn lights off.

Forty six percent of the 1,100 people questioned said they preferred to wrap up warm instead of fiddling with their thermostats.

Four out of five pointed the finger at pricing politics between power companies as being to blame for the rising cost of power. Three quarters blamed the national switch over to renewable power – yet despite this, three quarters were in favour of the change.

Politicians have voiced concern about rising costs, and EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger has even said that he want to give those in long term unemployment more money towards paying power bills.
