Extremely slick roads in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein made for treacherous driving conditions early Sunday, with one accident resulting in a 14-car pile up. Several motorways were closed, at least one for nearly five hours due to the icy conditions.

Some pedestrians fared no better, with the fire department reporting that four people in Hamburg had to be taken to hospital after slipping on icy sidewalks.

Hamburg transportation officials said they had 110 trucks working the roads.

The freezing rain is unlikely to change to snow, as the German Weather Service is forecasting a wet, not a white, Christmas, with high temperatures between seven and 13 degrees on Christmas Day.
