Tennis star Roger Federer was named Swiss male athlete of the year at the 2012 Credit Suisse Sports Awards on Sunday in Zurich.

It was the fifth time that Federer, who claimed his seventh victory at Wimbledon this year, has received the award.

The 31-year-old Basel native, who has won 17 Grand Slam titles, also picked up a silver medal at the London Olympics and triumphed in four Masters 1000 tournaments.

Federer travelled to Zurich to pick up the award even though he had just played an exhibition game in Bogata the day before.

He was joined by Nicola Spirig, 30, who was named Swiss female athlete of the year for her gold medal performance in the triathlon at the Olympic Games in London.

Spirig’s sprint through Hyde Park to win the competition in a photo finish ahead of Sweden’s Lisa Nordén remains one of the highlights of the Games for the Swiss team.

It was the first time the Zurich native has won the Sports Awards trophy.
