France: give more EU cash to farmers
Poland and France will join forces in a bid to increase the EU's farm aid funds, which are already the overall budget's most expensive item, their agriculture ministers said on Friday.
"We both agree that we need to advance the budgets, especially that of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)," French Agriculture Minister Stéphane le Foll said after talks with his Polish counterpart Stanislaw Kalemba.
Kalemba thanked him for "his efforts to increase the overall budget of the European Union, and in particular those of the CAP and the Cohesion Fund," which is the EU's development fund that helps poorer member states' economies catch up with the rest of the single market.
Poland is the Cohesion Fund's largest beneficiary, while France has long been the main recipient of EU farm aid and is dead set against possible cuts.
EU representatives held a summit on the EU's 2014-20 budget last month, but talks collapsed after the bloc was unable to come to an agreement, with Britain leading opposition to any additional spending at a time of austerity.
