Emergency services in Piteå, northern Sweden, responded with nine ambulances and one ambulance helicopter when the alarm came in around 12.30pm. They have transported all the injured people to the nearby Piteå älvdals and Sunderby hospitals, reported the TT news agency.

"It was a head on collision," emergency service coordinator Torbjörn Johansson told TT. The relatively intact bus appears to have pushed the car straight into the forest.

"There isn't much left of the car," local photographer Patrik Häggqvist told the tabloid Aftonbladet.

Local media cited reports of the bus catching fire. Aftonbladet reported that the bus driver called emergency services and said her legs were on fire.

The driver, who according to regional newspaper Norrbottens-Kuriren is in her fifties, is now being treated in hospital, despite initial reports that she had been stuck in her seat by the impact of the crash.
