Snowfalls hamper access on Swedish roads

There were widespread traffic problems in eastern areas of Sweden on Saturday as heavy snow continued to fall and temperatures plunged to well below freezing.

Several trucks got stuck on the E4 motorway at Torsboda outside Timrå during Saturday morning causing long tailbacks and diversions.

"The first truck got stuck at around 6am, then we got traffic going again for a while, but at 8am there was a blockage again," said Marcus Grahn at Västernorrland police.

Accessibility was also limited on roads in other areas of the country.

"What happens when it snows this much is that you get accessibility problems on the roads. I can take several hours before all the roads are accessible, said Lennart Helsing at the Transport Administration (Trafikverket).

More snow is forecast for Sunday but the pace is expected to slow down as the front pushes out over the Baltic Sea.

"On Sunday it will snow in the far south and the far north, although it can occur in patches elsewhere," said Lovisa Andersson, meteorologist at meteorological office SMHI.

Temperatures are expected to remain below zero on Monday with clear skies forecast for many areas towards the end of the week.

Meteorologist Lars Knutsson at SMHI indicated in a statement that more snow may be on its way in time for next weekend.
