Russians cruise to first place in tourist spending
They might not be many, but Russian tourists are the ones to empty their pockets when visiting Sweden, a new report shows.
Russian tourists account for just over 2 percent of the 16.7 million tourists who visit Sweden every year, but Russians spend more than any other nationality surveyed, spending an average of about 1,100 kronor ($166) a day.
The report, which looked mostly at Europeans, was compiled by the Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Tillväxtverket) and is based on interviews with 20,000 visitors.
At 14 percent, Russian tourists were the least likely to stay with friends or family during their visit to Sweden.
Polish visitors, meanwhile, were the most likely to stay with someone they knew – 44 percent found a spare bed or a couch to sleep on.
Instead, the majority of Russians stayed in hotels, as did the Swiss, French, Spanish, Brits, Americans and Austrians.
The Danes were the least likely to stay in a hotel, but that could in part be explained by figures showing many of their visits were quick one-day trips to Sweden
The Russians’ most unique feature is that one in three spend the night on a cruise ship. To put it in perspective, only 13 percent of Estonians, who come in second place, do the same.
