SAS flights resume after hurricane Sandy passes
Scandinavian airline SAS announced on Wednesday that flights to and from the east coast of the US have been reopened, after a two-day hiatus due to hurricane Sandy.
The hurricane caused two days’ worth of cancelled flights to and from airports in Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, leaving 2,050 passengers stranded on both sides of the Atlantic.
On Wednesday, the airline announced it would resume its normal operations with two Newark bound flights leaving Copenhagen and Stockholm in the morning.
“We’re flying as planned today,” said Malin Selander, spokesperson for SAS to the TT news agency.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you may experience. SAS would like to help you as much as we can,” the airline had earlier posted on their website.
The website offered affected passengers rebooking opportunities or full refunds, as well as compensation for hotels, phone calls, and meals.
Airports have been closed in New York and Washington since Monday but the JFK airport in New York and the Newark airport in New Jersey will open at 7am on Wednesday morning local time.
The hurricane has since passed, but not without leaving a hefty damage bill that media reports have estimated as $30-40 billion. More than 40 people died, the New York subway system is closed and flooded, and many are still reportedly without power.
