According to an eye witness working in the vicinity a small car mounted the pavement and drove straight into the pedestrians walking along Storgatan in the small town.

"The car drove straight into them," the eyewitness said.

The incident left seven people injured, several of them seriously.

According to Jan Fransson at the emergency services in Måla, all the injured were first transferred to the infirmary at Måla and then on to hospitals in Umeå and Lycksele.

Police confirmed the death of the 13-year-old boy later in the evening.

According to the police the other casualties include two thirteen year-old girls, an 18-year-old and a 43-year-old woman, currently in the care of Lycksele Hospital.

The two girls are seriously injured and are set to be transferred to the University Hospital in Umeå.

In Umeå they will join the remaining casualties - two children aged ten-years-old.

The driver, a man in his 20s, was also injured in the crash.

"It was probably an accident. There are prevailing winter conditions and it was slippery," said Jan Fransson.

Storgatan is the main thoroughfare through Malå with a speed limit of 50 kilometres per hour.

The parish house in Malå has been opened for relatives and for others with a need to talk over the accident.
