A German estate agent taking potential buyers to view a house opened the door to find the three-storey building filled to the rafters with cannabis plants.

The owners had put the house in Kerpen, North Rhine-Westphalia, on the market a year ago after failing to find a buyer quickly, had rented it out, the Express newspaper said on Monday.

But to the surprise of the estate agent – and the house owner - the 60-year-old man who rented it had turned the detached house into a huge hash plantation.

He kitted it out with top-notch equipment such as UV lighting, ventilation and special electricity transformers for the lights.

He must have been less than happy to have the estate agent ring the doorbell wanting to take a comprehensive look at the house.

“Get away from here,” he reportedly yelled to the unexpected visitors, and brought a large dog to the door, effectively ending the showing.

The owner persuaded the agent to go back – with a spare key – and he braved the prospect of the dog, and found the place filled with cannabis plants.

“What he found in there was unbelievable,” the owner told the Express- “I'm still stunned about what was happening in my house.”

They informed the police who confiscated more than 1,000 plants and related equipment, before arresting the grower – who had given his landlord a copy of his passport when renting the house.
