The council of Poppenhausen needs no lessons in cashing in on its name, which translates as something like "Bonksville." The picturesque Hessian village now boasts its own unique "path of love" for frisky ramblers.

As many as 800 people turned up as the 2.5-kilometre path opened this weekend, local tourism manager Andrea Müller said.

The path has three "activity stations" and various love-themed stops with two-person couches, where couples can lie down and enjoy the view - or whatever else the "anatomically-formed" wooden furniture suggests.

There are also various notices to get love-struck wanderers in the mood, including info signs that offer the phrase "I love you" in a hundred different languages, or sayings by famous writers and historical figures on the theme of love.

"The pushchair and wheelchair accessible path combines a fantastic panorama view of Poppenhausen and the surrounding hills Wasserkuppe and Pferdskopf," the path's promotional material promises.

"The stations and elements provide information all about the theme of love, invite you to relax, meditate and while away the time."

One couple has already booked a wedding on the path next year, Müller said.

Anticipating an influx of lovers with more stamina, the town is planning to extend the path in 2014.
