Former president Nicolas Sarkozy has been offered €250,000 to speak at a Morgan Stanley conference, according to weekly satirical paper Le Canard Enchainé.

The investment bank reportedly offered Sarkozy a quarter of a million euros for 45 minutes of his time – including a speech and photo opportunities.

If he accepts, the former head of state will join the likes of Tony Blair and Bill Clinton on the international corporate talk circuit.

Although the offer is much more than his former salary as President of the Republic – €21,300 a month – it is still a lot less than his international counterparts earn.

Tony Blair is paid a reported £2.5 million for being an advisor to bank JP Morgan.

Nicolas Teil, director of French celebrity conference agency, Confanim, said the fee Sarkozy has been offered “is very expensive compared to the rest of the market, but we shouldn’t forget that he once directed the fifth biggest power in the world.

“As a head hunter I can see why a company would spend so much money for his economic expertise.”
