Load of bullocks ox-trot at bovine races
Thousands of spectators flocked to the German the ox-racing championships this weekend, where competitors slip into lederhosen and onto a charging bullock.
London may have had the Olympics but the ox-racing is Germany’s own four-yearly sporting extravaganza.
More than 8,000 people turned up on Sunday to cheer on a load of bullocks with such names as Bot-Ox, Obama, Effindi and Bertl being ridden bare-back across a field in Bavaria.
Twenty three men and four woman, all clad in lederhosen, fought to be first over the finishing line this year, spurred on by a selection of risqué banners. One woman was even spotted holding a “Effindi I want your babies” placard, news magazine Der Spiegel reported on Monday.
The festivities went on all weekend in the town of Münsing, with a parade where the oxen are covered in flowers and trotted around by their riders.
There was also a ball afterwards, where guests were served roasted ox although there was no suggestion that the dinner was a less successful competitor.
