French Catholic prayer slams gay marriage

A prayer to be held in Catholic churches around France tomorrow for the Assumption has caused controversy by taking a shot at gay families.

The prayer, which will primarily focus on those affected by the economic crisis, will also be a reminder of the church’s commitment to traditional family values.

The French government has said it plans to legalize both marriage and adoption for same-sex couples.

Bishop Bernard Podvin, speaking to radio station France Inter on the subject, said: “To say that the Catholic Church is against homosexual marriage not the scoop of the century.

“But if it’s not a scoop, there must be debate. And yet there isn’t any.”

The prayer will also touch on themes such as euthanasia, and will refer to the political and economic leaders of France.
