Teen dies in hospital after Sollentuna shooting
The 17-year-old girl injured in the Monday shooting in Sollentuna in northern Stockholm has died in hospital, according to police.
“The preliminary investigation is carrying on and the prosecutor will decide on remand negotiations tomorrow,” said Anna Mofors Frid of the Stockholm police to news agency TT on Wednesday evening.
An 18-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of attempted murder. He was arrested on the street outside the building where the 17-year-old was shot just after 1pm on Monday.
Some twenty officers are working on the case and so far three people have been brought in for questioning but have been released and are not under suspicion for any crime.
According to experts it is unusual for teenagers to be killed by a peer. It happens perhaps twice a year in Sweden and it is even more unusual that the victim is a young woman. Over the last 22 years, only 15 girls in the age group 15-19 years of age have been killed by someone their own age.
“It is very unusual for teenage boys to kill teenage girls and extremely unusual for them to use a gun,” said Mikael Rying, criminology expert at the Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet)
The dead 17-year- old and the suspected perpetrator know each other from before.
“Young girls are most often killed by someone they know. Often it is a boyfriend, or an ex, or a close acquaintance,” Rying told TT.
