French petrol prices at highest since May

Petrol prices are at their highest in France since May this year, after President Francois Hollande failed to fulfil his campaign promise of freezing the price at the pumps.

Diesel now costs an average of €1.4060 per liter, unleaded €1.5740 and €1.6292 for super unleaded, according to figures published by the French department of Ecology and Energy published yesterday.

The hike in price is in fact due to a dip in the base price of crude oil, after which Hollande’s new government said it would not enforce a price freeze on petrol at filling stations.

Minister for the Economie, Pierre Moscovici, said last week that the government still had every intention of applying the price freeze if need be.
