Swede takes home Olympic wrestling bronze

Johan Eurén became Sweden’s latest medal winner at the Olympic games after winning a bronze in Monday’s 120 kilogramme men's Greco Roman Wrestling.

The fight took place on Monday evening against Belarusian Joseb Tjugosjvili, and included a bloody third period after the Swede’s left eyebrow was cut open.

When asked by the Dagens Nyheter (DN) for what was next on the cards, the 27-year-old Swede replied:

“First it’s the awards ceremony and then I’m going home to lie down.”

Eurén fought through a tough elimination round where he faced competitors from Kazakstan, Hungary, Iran and Estonia. The only match he lost was that against the Estonian in the semi-final.

While admittedly a “little sour” that he couldn’t sneak through against the Estonian in a tight semi-final, Eurén was ecstatic to be taking home a medal in his first Olympic Games.

“The bronze is awesome. It will take the best place in my trophy cabinet,” he told DN.

The gold medal in the event was taken by Cuban Mijain Lopez Nunez and the silver by Heiki Nabi from Estonia. The other bronze medal was snagged by Turkey's Riza Kayaalp.

The medal marks Sweden’s second bronze in the summer games, and Sweden’s sixth medal overall – leaving the country in 29th place.
