A recent survey has found Bern to be the most popular city in Switzerland, followed by Lucerne and then Zurich.

The survey, which was carried out by market research company Isopublic and published in the newspaper SonntagsBlick, questioned 1,056 people about their favourite cities and 1,326 people about their favourite cantons, online news site 20 Minuten reported.

Bern won the race for most loved city, with 16.3 percent of respondents voting in favour of the capital. Over 14 percent voted for Lucerne, and just under 10 percent voted for Zurich.

Last place in the cities contest went to Aarau, although Marcel Guignard, the Aarau mayor, doubted that many of those who gave the city a bad score had ever actually visited it.

The Bern mayor, Alexander Tschäppät, was very pleased with the result, putting the score down not only to the city’s history and beauty, but also to the kindness of local people.

“We have done our homework – built homes, calmed the traffic, carried out successful large-scale events such as the Euro 06,” Tschäppät said.

Ticino won the award for most loved canton, with a score of almost 82 from 100 possible points. Bern came next with just under 78 points, followed by Lucerne with just over 75 points. The canton of Nidwalden came last with just under 61 points.

The survey also confirmed that many perceive people from Zurich as being arrogant, whilst those from the Ticino are considered cheerful.
