Olympic 100-metre champion Usain Bolt, who confirmed his rank as the fastest man on the planet on Sunday night, thanked the Munich orthopaedist who treated his back a month before the Games as he celebrated.

Germany may have suffered a gold famine in London 2012 so far, but the country can lay claim to a nugget from one of the most prestigious Olympic medals of all - the 100-metre sprint.

"A piece of this medal goes to Germany," Bolt said after completing the race in 9.63 seconds, the second fastest 100m time in history.

During the ensuing euphoria, Bolt did not forget to thank his Bavarian doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, or "Mull" as Bolt calls him.

"He's the best doctor in the world," the 25-year-old Jamaican added, according to news magazine Focus. "The doctor is a great, great man. Thanks, doctor!"

Müller-Wohlfahrt, who also treats the Bayern Munich and German national football teams, treated Bolt's back problems this spring, following his defeats in the Jamaican trials to his training partner Yohan Blake.

According to a report in the Hamburger Morgenpost, "Mull" used cryotherapy, a "cold shock" treatment that involves liquid nitrogen.

Former footballer Jamie Redknapp, who was once treated by Müller-Wohlfahrt with an extract from the comb from the head of a hen, wrote a celebratory endorsement of "healing Hans" for the British Daily Mail newspaper earlier this month.

"This is not a back-street quack," Redknapp wrote. "He is world renowned and a master of his art."

Other international sports stars to have passed through Müller-Wohlfahrt's clinic include Steven Gerrard, Ronaldo, Jürgen Klinsmann, Paula Radcliffe, Michael Owen, Jose Maria Olazabal and Maurice Green, the British paper said.
