Nordén beaten by Spirig in dramatic photo finish

It took a photo to determine who came in first, but Swedish triathlete Lisa Nordén had to be content with the silver, after being beaten by Swiss Nicola Spirig at the finish line in Saturday’s women’s triathlon final.

“We won’t contest the decision. We have looked at the images and the Swiss contestant is ahead. It is tight but clear,” said Anders Wiggerud, sports director for the Swedish Olympic Committee to daily Aftonbladet.

Nordén and Spirig finished so close in Saturday's triathlon that they were given the same time of 1 hour 59 minutes 48 seconds.

However after consulting the footage, officials said that the Swede finished 15 centimetres behind Spirig, therefore determining her as number two.

Despite being so close to the gold, being awarded the silver medal in the London 2012 Summer Olympics is still a feat for Nordén, as the athlete has been battling injuries for the last few months.

“Lisa’s journey over the last few month has been spectacular considering her injuries. And she still managed to pull it off. We have shed so many tears,” said team captain Thomas Viker to Sveriges Radio (SR).

The bronze went to Australia’s Erin Densham, coming in just two seconds behind Spirig and Nordén.
