According to the police, the men were shot in the legs and were conscious when they were taken to hospital in an ambulance shortly after midnight.

The shootings are the third gun-related incident to occur in the town on consecutive evenings and police believe that the shootings are part of a drug-related dispute.

"We have had them under observation for a long time, generally they are engaged in drugs offences, blackmail and other forms of violent crime," said Fredrik Wallén at Sörmlands police.

Late Monday two men were injured in a shooting outside of a school.

While the men were able to drive themselves to the local Mälaren Hospital, one remains in hospital being treated for gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

The other, 28-year-old, man was shot in the leg and he is reported to have been targeted in a further shooting the following day. He is reported to be previously known to police.

All of the shootings have been classified by police as attempted murder.

Some 20 people are believed to be involved in the criminal network and around half of them directly involved in the shootings.

None of the injured parties have been forthcoming in police interviews and police are hopeful that more witnesses will come forward.
