The woman was moving a roll of paper weighing in at 20 tonnes and was squeezed hard, dying immediately.

According to police reports the woman's unfortunate demise may have been caused by her pushing the wrong button on the remote control.

A co-worker was a witness to the accident but was unable to prevent it, according to the local Hela Hälsingland daily.

Several other colleagues made attempts to revive the woman while they waited for an ambulance, but to no avail.

When the ambulance arrived, the woman was declared dead.

While the machine was turned off after the accident it was due to be put back into service on Sunday.

"It is important to resume routines to divert the mind," said spokesperson Staffan Sjöberg at Iggesund Paperboard to the newspaper.

The accident will be investigated by Gävleborg police and the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket).

The woman is reported to have been employed as temporary summer staff at the factory, which is owned and run by Swedish pulp and paper concern Holmen Paper.
