In a move bound to thrill ski enthusiasts, a new ski lift may soon be built linking Zermatt-Cervinia with the northern Italian Monterosa resort.

The planned lift will provide a cross-border link between the already popular resorts of Zermatt and Cervinia, which sit either side of the iconic Matterhorn mountain, and the three Italian valleys of Gressonay, Ays and Sesia, newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung reports.

Zermatt mayor Christoph Bürgin confessed he was excited by the planned link-up, which is to be co-financed by the regions involved.

“I visited the three valleys for the first time last winter and was absolutely thrilled. Monterosa Ski has been developed with modern facilities and would represent a valuable complement to Zermatt/ Cervinia,” he told NZZ.

With 300 kilometres of pistes already available at Zermatt-Cervinia, the expansion would offer skiers more than 650 kilometres of slopes.

A feasibility study costing some 400,000 francs ($409,550) to prepare has estimated that the construction of a cable car or chairlift would cost between 30 and 35 million francs ($30.7 – 35.9 million), which in ski-area investment terms is relatively moderate, the newspaper reported.

Zermatt has already exploited all its potential for expansion, and could only really grow with this kind of collaboration, the paper said.
