The accident occurred on the night between Saturday and Sunday. The boy, originally from Stockholm, was walking home along a road together with some friends, attempting to hitchhike, when a car came driving in the other direction.

The driver didn't see the group of pedestrians until it was too late, and hit two of them.

"The car was driving 70 kilometres an hour, it was dark and wet, and the driver had no chance to swerve," said Helsingborg police officer Minna Friberg to the TT news agency.

The other boy who was hit by the car was also injured, and has been hospitalized, but reportedly did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

Several eye-witnesses were shocked.

When the accident occurred emergency services, police patrols and three ambulances quickly arrived on the scene, reported local newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad (HD).

"We always try to take care of witnesses on the spot. We try to establish crisis management out there," said Helsingborg fireman Christer Haraldsson to HD.

Police officers don't suspect any crime.
