Several rapes reported in small Swedish town

Early on Sunday morning police were alerted to the third outdoor rape reported in less than 24 hours in the small Swedish town of Varberg.

A woman in her twenties was raped in a park in central Varberg, according to local police.

"There's currently no reason to believe that these rapes are connected in any way. More like the other way around," said the Halland police force's duty officer Jan Kapteijn to local newspaper Hallands Nyheter.

The rape occurred sometime before 4am, according to Hallands Nyheter.

Police officers have spent the night attempting to secure possible traces that the attacker may have left, and the woman has been examined by doctors.

"I don't know much more about the case right now," said the duty officer early on Sunday morning.

Varberg is a small town of less than 30,000 inhabitants, but despite three rapes reported and a weekend full of drunkenness and fights, Varberg's police still think the weekend was calmer than they'd expected, they said to Hallands Nyheter.

"We can't be naive", said Kapteijn.

As a summer resort, Varberg fills with tourists during July. This weekend has been especially crowded and raucous due to the Wheels & Wings fest held in Varberg.

"We usually say that in July every day is like Saturday in a city like Varberg," Kapteijn said.
