Man survives after car plunges into ravine
A 65-year-old man who failed to return from a shopping errand late on Sunday night was found stuck inside his car which had plunged headfirst into a six-metre ravine and had stuck fast.
The man had been running an errand in Ebbarp, near Perstorp in southern Sweden, at around 11pm on Sunday and when he did not return, worried relatives called the police.
“They felt like something had happened and we decided to drive along the route with a relative of the man, as the area has a number of dangerous stretches – and indeed, off one of the most dangerous parts we found the car,” said Peter Martin of the Skåne police to the Aftonbladet newspaper.
The police found the man inside his car, which had driven off a cliff and been wedged six metres below between the two narrow walls of a ravine.
The car was stuck vertically, with the headlights pointing towards the water below which flowed just centimetres beneath the car’s bonnet.
The 65-year-old was conscious, but his restricted movement inside the crushed car meant that he had been unable to alert anyone.
The man was taken to hospital after having been stuck in the car for over thirty minutes, yet he only suffered minor head injuries.
Meanwhile, police can only point to luck as an explanation for the man’s survival.
“It was lucky that the car hadn’t gone down on its side and rolled over the edge, as then the outcome could have been different,” Martin told the paper.
“All in all, you can truly say that in all this bad luck – he was lucky.”
