Drunk man misses flight despite bomb threat ploy

A drunk man who was late for his flight from Stockholm's Arlanda airport told security staff there was a bomb on board in hopes the ensuing delay would give him time to make the flight.

The man, who was heavily intoxicated at the time, told Arlanda airport officials Thursday morning that the SAS flight he was due to board contained a bomb.

“He was very, very drunk and was shouting and yelling,” said Kennet Knuts, the Station Commander of Arlanda Border Police to The Local.

The flight, which was destined for Malta, was cancelled and all the passengers had to leave the plane and board another, enduring a two hour delay before takeoff.

Meanwhile, police searched the plane for any traces of a bomb, but found none.

However, Knuts admits he was sceptical about the possibility of a bomb actually being on the plane in the first place.

“He was never on the flight so it was impossible for him to have put bomb on the plane himself,” he said.

The man was put in a detox cell to sober up, but was released some eight hours later after being questioned by police.

Knuts added, however, that police continue to investigate the matter.

If the man is convicted for making a false threat, he risks being sentenced to up to one year in prison.
