Over a three year period, the woman took newborn kittens and placed them in her freezer shortly after they were born, the Aftonbladet newspaper reported.

The woman explained her actions by claiming that she was too poor to have the kittens properly euthanized by a veterinarian.

In order to go through with the repeated kitten killings, the woman drank alcoholic beverages before she then placed the newborn cats in plastic bags and put them in her kitchen freezer.

She was then forced to leave the room to escape the sound of the kittens' woeful meowing.

All told, the woman killed 38 kittens by freezing and suffocating them to death, according to the paper.

During her trial in the Kalmar District Court, the woman admitted to taking the kittens' lives, but argued that she didn't want them to suffer.

But veterinary officials from the country administrative board told the court the young animals had indeed been subjected to long and painful deaths.

The court convicted the woman, slapping her with fines and a suspended sentence for animal cruelty.

In addition, the county administrative board has banned the woman from owning pets, prohibiting her from having her own pet or taking care of others' pets.
