Angry voters dump parking fines in ballot boxes

Voters on the island of Corsica found a novel way to protest the recent introduction of new parking fees this weekend - by using parking tickets as voting slips.

Residents of Ajaccio, Corsica's capital, went to the polling stations on Sunday, but not to put a cross by their favoured candidate in the parliamentary elections.

Instead, they put their parking tickets in the ballot box.

The introduction of new parking charges in the centre of Ajaccio in early February has enraged local residents.

People living in central Ajaccio are now being charged €76.80 per month, or €922 per year, to park on the streets near their homes - compared to €160 per year for residents of Paris. Residents and business owners in the city have circulated petitions to get the charges reduced.

Residents' committee chairman Jean-Pierre Sollacaro told local paper Corse-Matin that the city's inhabitants were "willing to pay 25 euros a month, like in Montpelier, for instance", but not the current charges.
