“The man allegedly was waving the gun around,“ said Anders Lindell of the Malmö police to news agency TT.

Several locals had contacted the Malmö police around 12.50pm after observing a man on a balcony near a school, holding a gun in his hand. By 2.30pm the police had identified the man’s apartment but raiding it, they found it was empty.

In the flat, however, they found an air gun left behind.

After searching the area, they came across a man fitting the description and brought him in for questioning.

“A man has been arrested in the area and taken in for questioning suspected of being the person witnesses had observed on a balcony with a gun in his hand,” the police confirmed on their website.

The children from a nearby school were brought to safety indoors after the alarm was called, but no one was reportedly injured.

The police are now investigating whether the man had in fact been shooting from the balcony or whether it was a false alarm.
