Mum reports midwife for computer work mid-birth

A woman has reported a midwife to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) after she was forced to go into childbirth on her feet while the nurse sat at a nearby table on the computer.

The patient, who is 40, was left standing as she began childbirth at the maternity ward of the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, north of Stockholm.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old midwife sat at a nearby computer looking at her computer screen, according to the report.

The patient was at the end of her 39th week of pregnancy and was in severe pain after the birth, although the baby was delivered safely.

The 40-year-old has now reported the midwife to the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) stating that she was incompetent.

The patient, who wrote that she “lost a lot of blood” in the ordeal, also wrote that she believed that her unborn baby’s life was in danger.

The board has reviewed the case and considers that it may be the hospital which is at fault rather than the midwife.

Even though the midwife was undertrained to take care of the birth alone, the board wrote that she should not have been left by herself in such circumstances.
