The event, which was being held for the eleventh consecutive year, stretched through several parts of the city and along the Rhine, where revellers enjoyed the sunny weather and took in a Japanese firework display from the banks in the evening.

There were three main stages where different sides of Japan's culture were presented to curious onlookers, and food stands offering a smorgasbord of regional delicacies.

An origami stand proved to be one of the biggest hits of the day - according to regional media group Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung their intricate paper creations had sold out by 5 pm.

Popular Japanese comic style Manga was a big favourite among visitors, many of whom came dressed as their favourite characters. Others indulged in hours of another Japanese craze, karaoke.

With around 7,000 people, Düsseldorf has one of Europe's biggest Japanese communities.
